Carmada is a street fleet of colorful art vehicles traveling Florida’s Bay area and beyond, where artists transform the familiar car into something fantastic, setting public art loose as inspiration on wheels. Making street art accessible and fun for all ages, Carmada programs create work opportunities for artists, while promoting the State of the Arts license plate that funds arts agencies throughout Florida.
Experience it for yourself when the next pop-up Carmada showcase brings art cars and more to St. Petersburg Sept. 1 and Sept. 10, 2016, during the SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival.
On Sept. 1, from 6 to 11 p.m., see art cars on display during the SHINE Creative Block Opening Party at Central Avenue and 5th Street in downtown St. Pete. Vote for your favorite car, and the winning vehicle artist or team will receive a SHINE prize package and custom-designed trophy. Throughout the event, local artist Cecilia Lueza will lead a team of volunteers to transform the actual street intersection into a vibrant ground-level mural.
Celebrate again on Sept. 10 with SHINE Live, the festival’s culminating block party, where you can catch another showcase of Carmada art cars and see live painting by artists James Oleson and Justin Wagher, who will transform a vehicle owned by local non-profit Giving Tree Music into a mobile work of art, sponsored by Public Art Project. The vehicle’s colorful new paint job will inspire budding musicians all over the country as Giving Tree travels far and wide to build community through human empowerment.
